London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Bringing clarity and creative support to a complex health study in Lake Titicaca

Amantani is a remote island in Lake Titicaca, reached only by a long boat journey from the nearest towns in southern Peru. The community is small, resilient, and culturally unique, yet faces significant barriers to healthcare access. When a research team from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, led by Maria Calderón, began studying the island’s health needs, they needed support capturing the story, documenting the process, and communicating the findings to stakeholders back in London. FWB joined the effort to help shape, organize, and present the work clearly and respectfully.

Understanding the health realities of an indigenous community off the map...and on

FWB supported the research team by helping document the fieldwork and translate the complexity of the project into compelling communication materials for funders, faculty, and institutional partners.

Despite its rich cultural identity, Amantani had no reliable data on the health needs of its population. Maria Calderón and her team developed a field survey to understand the community’s access to medical care, the prevalence of preventable conditions, and local knowledge around disease and wellbeing. With limited resources and a volunteer-based field team, the project required creative problem solving, lean tools, and clear communication.

Experiencing places like Amantani is a reminder that data alone never tells the whole story. The strength of its people, the beauty of the island, and the realities they face make the work both necessary and humbling. Projects like this are not only about assessing needs, but honoring the lives behind them.

A place that teaches you more than you can measure

The Challenge

A remote community, limited resources, and the need for a clear story

Reaching every selected household required navigating steep terrain, long walking routes, and homes scattered across the entire island. The team also needed to engage residents, coordinate volunteer health professionals, and ensure every household was reached respectfully and accurately. The London School needed a way to show this reality, not just describe it, so stakeholders could understand the project’s impact and the conditions in which it unfolded. That required clear visuals, thoughtful storytelling, and documentation that honored the island and its people.

The Ask

Support for communicating a complex and meaningful public-health effort

More an adventure than a task, but was all-in nonetheless to help shape the narrative behind the work, document the effort through photography and video, and develop materials that would allow London School leadership and partners to understand the urgency and value of the project. They needed support that respected the cultural context, matched the sensitivity of the work, and helped translate logistical complexity into a clear, human story. Additionally, as part of the broader effort, the campaign included a public open call offering free medical examinations for everyone on the island, delivered by volunteer doctors who joined the field team. This became an essential part of the narrative, showing not only what was being studied, but what was being given back.

The Solution

Creative strategy, documentation, and clear communication for stakeholders

We helped with any creative strategy and on-the-ground support, working closely with the research team to capture imagery, video, and story elements that showed the realities of island life, the challenges of the work, and the importance of the study. We structured the narrative, shaped the core messages, and created a visual and editorial framework that highlighted both the scientific effort and the human side of the project. Photography and video documentation were used to bring the work and story to life back in London, while design support helped the team present the findings, the field process, and the medical outreach in a way that was easy for stakeholders to understand and share.

The Result

A clear, compelling presentation that elevated the work and its impact

The final campaign materials helped the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine communicate the depth and importance of the project, making the case for continued support, future research, and expanded resources for indigenous communities in high-altitude regions. The documentation also supported internal advocacy, helped secure visibility for the volunteer team, and provided a record of the community engagement and medical services delivered on the island. Most importantly, the work honored the people of Amantani by portraying their story with accuracy, dignity, and respect.
